General Assembly – click here to learn how to use the MGA website!

You can find out what is happening to any bill by accessing the Maryland Legislative website http://www.mlis.state.md.us/ clicking on "Bill information and status", typing in the bill number, and clicking on select. Current information concerning the status of the bill will be available. You can find out what committee heard the bill, and when that hearing occurred, when the committee made a decision, and what action was taken by the House of Delegates and the Senate.  Any words or numbers that are underlined act as a link to additional information.  You can read the text of any bill in its entirety by clicking on the underlined bill number.  There is also a fiscal note/analysis listed under documents.  (The fiscal note/analysis is usually available immediately before the bill hearing date.)

If you do not know the number of the bill, click on "Bill Indexes and Profiles" on the main site and search by " One or Two Subjects".

You can also search by "Sponsor". Sometimes that is an easier search than trying to find the subject a bill is listed under. The bills of which the delegate is the primary sponsor are listed first in numerical order; then any bills that the Delegate cosponsors are listed in numerical order. This can also be done for any year further down on the web site by clicking on "Prior Session Information".

Finally, there is an excellent "Search Site" feature which allows you to search for key words in a bill.

After you find the information on the bill, you might wish to contact the lead sponsor. There is often an interesting story behind why a legislator sponsors a piece of legislation. (Many delegates are at their district offices, so e-mail is probably the best way to contact them). If you wish to phone them, use the Maryland Manual (info below) to find out the phone number of the district offices.

Finally, you may wish to contact the Committee office to discuss the bill. (When you find the bill, it will indicate what committee it was assigned to.)

I would also recommend that you use the Maryland Manual which is an underlined link under "The Maryland General Assembly" heading on the mlis website to find out information on the individual legislators or the administration.
